Gramercy Park is a fenced private garden square laid out by Samuel B. Ruggles in 1831, and its gates still open only with a key held by the residents of the buildings around it. A short walk downtown, the West Village, the western part of Greenwich Village, keeps its older, off-grid street pattern, and much of it lies within the Greenwich Village Historic District, designated in 1969.
